First visit

Never been to an onsen? Perfect.

Six steps, one rule, zero stress. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you walk through the door.

  1. 01

    Walk in

No booking, ever. Come to 173/3 Surawong Road any day — weekdays from 2 PM, weekends from noon. Pay ฿600 cash at the stone reception desk, get your locker key and towels.

  2. 02

    Change & stow

Lockers are on the mezzanine. Everything — clothes, phone, watch — goes in. You'll carry a small towel; the big one waits for after. Yes, you bathe nude. Within five minutes it's the most normal thing in the world.

  3. 03

    Wash first — always

The one sacred rule of every onsen on earth: shower thoroughly at the wash stations before touching the water. Soap, rinse, done. Locals will clock you as a person of culture.

  4. 04

    The circuit

Ten minutes in the 41° hot bath. One minute in the 19° plunge. Ten minutes flat in the rest lounge. Repeat three times, add the sauna or steam room whenever it calls you. There is no schedule. Nobody hurries here.

  5. 05

    Eat

Your entry includes a full Japanese set meal in the tatami restaurant, refills included. Most guests eat between soaks. The karaage has fans on three continents.

  6. 06

Stay as long as you like

One ticket covers you until midnight. Nap on a day bed, sink into a massage chair, go back for one more soak. When you finally step onto Surawong Road, you will be a softer, better-smelling man.

First-timer questions

Is it awkward for first-timers at Maxwell Onsen?

Not at all. Maxwell Onsen sees first-time onsen guests every single day. The staff will point you through check-in, the etiquette is one rule (wash before you soak), and the crowd is famously easygoing. Most first-timers stay five hours.

Do I need to speak Thai to visit Maxwell Onsen?

No. Maxwell Onsen's staff handle English comfortably, signage is bilingual, and the venue hosts Japanese, Korean, Chinese and Western guests daily.

Can I go to Maxwell Onsen alone?

Absolutely — going solo is the classic way to visit Maxwell Onsen. Soak, eat, rest, repeat. Plenty of guests come alone and leave with friends.

No booking. Just come.
